Ford beats Chevy. No, Chevy’s better than Ford. You hear it all the time when car and truck people get together and battle for their favorite truck manufacturer. Sometimes it can get rather heated. But here at Hardy Family Ford in Dallas, Georgia, we’re going to keep the hyperbole to an absolute zero and turn up the logic and objectivity to their maximum to find which is truly a better full-size pickup truck—the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or the 2019 Ford F-150.

Warranty Coverage: Ford F-150 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

From the start, both Ford and Chevrolet offer the same warranty coverage for their new trucks, 36 months/36,000 miles. They also offer the same powertrain coverage, 60 months/ 60,000 miles.

Towing and Payload Capacity: Ford F-150 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Now, let’s look at what truck owners care about most—towing and hauling capacity. The 2019 Ford F-150 can tow a maximum of 13,200 pounds. The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 can only tow 12,500 pounds, 700 fewer pounds than the F-150. The Ford F-150’s maximum payload capacity is 3,270 pounds. The Chevy Silverado 1500 can only haul a maximum of 2,590 pounds. Ford F-150 overpowers the Chevy Silverado 1500 by a significant 680 pounds. That’s a huge difference in the F-150’s favor.

Engine Choices: The Ford F-150 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Another item high on the list of truck buyers is engine offerings. Ford offers six different engine options for the F-150, while Chevrolet only offers four engines for the Silverado 1500. One of the engine options for the F-150 is a high-torque turbocharged diesel. Chevrolet doesn’t offer any diesel option for the Silverado 1500, turbo or not.

Within the engine options, both Ford and Chevy have a 2.7L turbocharged V6 for their full-size pickups. The Chevy produces 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s small V6 produces 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The Ford engine really outpowers and out torques the Chevy engine by a significant amount.

Chevrolet provides two V8 options while Ford offers one. Comparing the V8s that are similar in size, the Ford 5.0L generates 395 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, while the larger Chevrolet 5.3L engine gives 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Again, Ford bests Chevy where it matters most, under the hood.

In another David and Goliath type story, a smaller 3.5L Ford V6 beats the larger 4.3L Chevy V6. The Ford engine produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, while the bigger Chevy engine can only put out 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. Again, a larger Chevy engine loses to a smaller, more powerful Ford engine. The deeper story here is that liter for liter, Ford engines produce a lot more horsepower and torque than Chevrolet engines.

In addition to the difference in engine power, the Ford engines compared above get better gas mileage than the Chevy engines. More power and better fuel-efficiency are what you get with these Ford engines.
