Since 2009, RAM has been trying to make a name for itself in the full-size pickup truck market. This is a market that Ford has dominated for decades, proven by the fact that the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck in America for 42 years running. Here, at Hardy Family Ford in Dallas, Georgia, we wanted to see if the 2019 Ram 1500 is making any headway to knock the F-150 off its best-selling pedestal it’s occupied for so long.

2019 Ram 1500 Engine Options

Moving to engine options, the Ram 1500 only offers three engines. Ford F-150, however, has six engine options, giving you a much larger range of applications for the truck you choose. It’s important to note that only Ford gives you a diesel option. Ram doesn’t offer any diesel engine for its 2019 1500 pickup.

Looking more deeply into each engine both manufacturers offer, Ram furnishes a V6 and “two” V8s. The Ram 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The “two” V8 engine options are actually the same 5.7L Hemi V8 engine, only one has the Ram eTorque box and one does not. Both engines produce 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

Ford’s engine lineup starts with an overachieving 2.7L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine. This efficient yet powerful engine generates 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, outshining Ram’s larger 3.6L V6.

Next, is the Ford 3.3L V6. Producing 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, this engine has numbers most like the larger Ram 3.6L Pentastar. Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost motor generates 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, putting out 60 more lb-ft of torque than the bigger Ram 5.7L V8.

Held exclusively for the Ford F-150 Raptor and the top of the line F-150 Limited, the High Output 3.5L EcoBoost boasts 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This Ford V6 outperforms the entire line of Ram 1500 engines by miles.

For V8 fans, Ford F-150 has a 5.0L delivering 395 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, matching the Ram Hemi 5.7L V8 with much less displacement. And if you need a diesel, Ford F-150 has you covered. It’s 3.0L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel achieves a Best-in-Class 11,500-pound maximum towing capacity and 1,940 maximum payload capacity with 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. And it delivers all that power with a Best-in-Class 30 miles per gallon (MPG) on the highway.

The 2019 Ford F-150 has the Edge in Efficiency and Capability

It is also important to note that Ford’s MPG rating across its six engines matches or exceeds the MPG rating for each comparable Ram engine. More power and better fuel economy mean more work for fewer dollars, saving you money with every mile. To top it all off, 2019 Ford F-150 has a maximum towing capacity of 13,200 pounds, whereas the 2019 Ram 1500 maxes out at 12,750 pounds. And the Ford F-150 starting price is $28,155— $3640 less than Ram 1500’s excessive $31,795 starting price.
