Re-released with a fresh design, the 2019 Ford Ranger has come roaring back to the road after seven years away. This means there’s a new top contender in town for midsize trucks like the popular Tacoma. To see how these two stack up against one another, let’s check out their features and name a winner at Hardy Family Ford in Dallas, GA.

Performance and Exterior

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma offers two different engine options depending on what you’re looking for. The standard is a 2.7L 4-cylinder engine with 159 hp and 180 lb. ft. of torque. Toyota also offers a 3.5L V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb. ft. of torque. With the inline 4, the Tacoma can tow up to 3,500 lbs. while the V6 can tow up to 6,500 lbs. Both engines come standard with rear-wheel drive but can be changed to four-wheel drive. Fuel efficiency is around 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

The 2019 Ford Ranger only offers a single engine option, but it’s best-in-class for its gas-powered 2.3L EcoBoost engine with 270 hp and 310 lb. ft. of torque. It offers best-in-class fuel efficiency at 21 mpg city and 26 mpg hwy. Thanks to its powerful engine, the Ranger also offers a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs. and a max payload of 1,860 lbs. Unlike the Tacoma’s 6-speed transmission, the Ranger offers a 10-speed transmission on all models and a part-time four-wheel drive system for a smoother ride all around.

When it comes to the exterior, both trucks are somewhat similar in styling, but the Ranger’s bed length is a bit longer than the Tacoma’s 60.5¬-72.8-inch range with a 61-74.4-inch range.

Tech and Safety Features

While the Tacoma has been around for a long while, it continues to look a bit more rugged on the inside than its Ranger counterpart. It offers two USB 2.0 ports, an Entune Audio system with 7-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging (with top trim package), and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The Tacoma also comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite which includes pre-collision pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, auto-adjust cruise control, start-stop technology, and automatic high beams.

The 2019 Ford Ranger has a more luxurious feel in the interior and offers an 8-inch voice-activated touch screen, Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system that connects to your smartphone, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, two smart-charging USB ports, Waze and Alexa connectivity, and Wi-Fi. With the Ranger’s FordPass Connect app, drivers can start and stop their truck, get roadside assistance, check fuel and tire levels from their phones, and connect up to 10 different devices at once through it’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that reaches up to 50 ft. outside of the vehicle. It also offers a compatible safety suite called Co-Pilot 360 which includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, a rear-view camera, forward collision warning with brake support, a lane keeping system, and auto beam headlamps.
