After a 24-year wait, the iconic Bronco is finally returning to Ford’s lineup for spring 2021. This time, it’s accompanied by a spirited pony: the Bronco Sport. Although they bear the same storied name, the 2021 Bronco and 2021 Bronco Sport are actually two different animals. The experts at Hardy Family Ford in Dallas, GA have broken down the similarities and differences between these Broncos. Either one could be best for you based on your needs!

2021 Ford Bronco Sport Takes Cues from the Ford Escape

The 2021 Bronco Sport sounds like a chip off the old block, but it actually shares roughly 80 percent of its parts with the Ford Escape! For starters, the Bronco Sport’s unibody chassis is derived from the “car-based” Escape as opposed to the “truck-based” Bronco, whose chassis closely resembles the Ford Ranger pickup. Plus, the doors and roof are only removable on the original Bronco. Here are a few other ways the Bronco Sport aligns with the Escape:

Engines

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport shares its two engine options with the Ford Escape: a 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, the latter of which produces 245 horsepower and 275 pounds-feet of torque. In contrast, the big Bronco offers either a 2.3-liter inline-four EcoBoost or a 2.7-liter V-6. The V-6 provides the most exhilarating ride of all with 310 horsepower and 400 pounds-feet of torque!

Transmission

While the Ford Bronco Sport applies the Escape’s eight-speed automatic transmission across all trims, the 2021 Bronco’s automatic transmission is a 10-speed. Or you can opt for the new-to-Ford Getrag 7MTI550 seven-speed manual gearbox with a dedicated “crawler” gear.

Suspension

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport retains the Escape's fully independent front strut and rear multilink suspension design, compared to the Bronco’s control-arm front suspension and live rear axle, which promotes ground clearance.

Both the 2021 Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport Are Born to Be Wild

Sharing many similarities with the Ford Escape doesn’t make the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport tame. It still lives up to the Bronco name. Like its big brother, the Bronco Sport performs at or near the top of its segment off-road, thanks in part to Ford’s High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension (HOSS) system. This revision of the aforementioned Escape suspension increases track width, suspension travel, and ground clearance while preventing a bumpy ride. When you’re racing the Bronco Sport through streams, sand, or soil, you’ll know for a fact that you aren’t driving an Escape! That said, if you live, eat, and breathe off-road, you’d be remiss not to get the big Bronco, which puts up best-in-class numbers that cement its status as the ultimate trailblazer. You’ll have no trouble roving over rocks with the 2021 Ford Bronco’s meaty 35-inch tires and beadlock wheels, and you can tackle steeper inclines and sharper drops with its greater breakover and departure angles. Get ready to conquer the unknown!

Look Effortlessly Cool in Either Bronco

In addition to off-road prowess, both vehicles share unmistakably Bronco retro styling. With their classic rugged design, round headlamps, and vibrant colors, the 2021 Bronco and Bronco Sport standout on the highway and in the wilderness.
